About
Fazenda das Almas earned a place among Brazil’s elite at the 2025 Cup of Excellence, taking 9th in the Experimental category. The coffee behind the award? An Arara lot with anaerobic fermentation, grown by Matheus Maringoli Muniz. Expect caramel sweetness, ripe blackberry juiciness, and a bright grapefruit acidity. About Fazenda das Almas The farm’s story spans three generations. Founded in 1942, Fazenda das Almas now covers 102 hectares in Cabo Verde, Minas Gerais. This is the Região Vulcânica — the Volcanic Region — where mineral-rich soils feed the trees at 1,100 meters. The name means “Farm of the Souls,” and the coffee honors that history in every harvest. Meanwhile, the family’s standards run high: the farm holds UTZ, BSCA, and Rainforest Alliance certifications. For this lot, Matheus chose the Arara cultivar, prized for sweetness and clarity. Then he fermented the cherries in sealed, oxygen-free tanks before drying. That anaerobic step deepens the fruit character while keeping the cup remarkably clean. What’s in the Cup Caramel arrives first. Next comes a wave of ripe blackberry, juicy and generous. Finally, a grapefruit acidity brightens the finish and keeps every sip lively. In short, this is an experimental coffee that still drinks beautifully. It rewards a slow pour-over, and it turns iced coffee into something worth planning a morning around. For filter brewing, start with a 1:16 ratio and adjust to taste.
